‘Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ Comic-Con trailer: Watch now

SAN DIEGO – Middle Earth has returned to Hall H with a bang.

Amazon’s highly anticipated “Lord of the Rings” series, “The Rings of Power,” showed off a bombastic trailer and a few clips at San Diego Comic-Con’s legendary Hall H Friday, revealing to a huge crowd of JRR Tolkien superfans just what the streaming service has been working on in secret for so many years. The series premieres on Prime Video Sept. two.

The trailer displayed the huge cast and many worlds of the prequel series, which is based on appendix material from Tolkien’s “Rings” books and set 4,000 years before the movies. The preview scenes visibly overwhelmed panel host and “Rings” superfan Stephen Colbert, who needed a moment to “take it all in” after the trailer featured a fiery balrog monster (seen in the first “Rings” movie “The Fellowship of the Ring” ).

“I don’t even know who some of those people are,” Colbert told producers JD Payne, Patrick McKay and Lindsey Weber. “I hope you do.”

Colbert told the crowd he would ask the hard-hitting questions, like “Why do some elves have haircuts and where is the salon? And do female dwarves have beards?” The haircuts and beards question was answered: Payne said not all elves look alike, so some have short hair, and Weber said that yes, female dwarves have beards.

The producers and cast were trying to sell the series to the fans who are most familiar with the Peter Jackson films, which aren’t connected with the story of the series. McKay, Payne and Weber have been working on it for almost five years, and were visibly emotional. “I don’t know whether to cry, (expletive) or go blind,” McKay joked.
